NOTE: WE ARE UNABLE TO ACCEPT REQUESTS FOR BANNERS AT THIS TIME
Blue Star Families & Friends of Blountstown began as a group of local family members and friends of those serving in the U.S. military.
With the leadership and assistance of Logan Barbee, past director of the Calhoun County Cooperative Extension Service, this all-volunteer group formed in March 2003, after Operation Enduring Freedom was under way and at the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The main focus of the project was to show support for our troops by making and giving a personalized service flag, or “Blue Star Banner,” to the family of each Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine in the local community, free of charge. Businesses that had employees serving in the National Guard or Reserves were eligible to receive a banner, as well. Each banner had a label attached to the back with the service member’s name and branch of service.
From the beginning to the end of the project, the group produced about 175 service flags. A couple of volunteers continued the effort for as long as possible, and the number of banners surpassed 200.
Requests for banners for local service members are still being accepted and are filled as quickly as one person can handle the workload.
Requests for Gold Star Banners for anyone who is eligible to receive one are top priority and will be filled as soon as possible.
Two community members proudly display banners representing their loved ones.
